The National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC) collects, stores and preserves geoscientific data and information of long-term value to the nation and makes them available to a wide range of users and communities. The data we manage includes both digital data and information, as well as physical data assets and information, such as reports, maps, geological samples, borehole core and related subsurface information from the UK landmass and continental shelf.

Our physical geological materials and subsurface information are managed through the National Geological Repository (NGR), a  (���ճԹ�) national science facility and host to the largest collection of geoscience samples from the UK. The ���ճԹ� Library also forms part of NGDC.   

Part of the Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC)’s  and based at the , NGDC also coordinates the management of geoscience data from NERC/���ճԹ�-funded research and supports researchers in complying with national and international data legislation and policy. This includes providing support to NERC-funded grant holders covering the entire research and data management life cycle. 

Through ���ճԹ�/���ճԹ�, NGDC is the designated place of deposit for data as a result of borehole drilling to a depth of more than 15 m (water) or 30 m (minerals), as set out in UK statute. Notification of an individual’s intention to drill a borehole must also be registered with ���ճԹ�. For full guidance, visit our drilling legislation and obligations page.
